Subject: FT STANTON MULTI DAY RIDE - UPDATE (EXCELLENT)

I just returned from several days of trail marking and clearing.
Afternoon rains (mostly sprinkles with a few strong showers) occurred
each day for the last 4 or 5 days with predictions of continued showers
    - very good news. Grass is still brown, but everything looks good.
Daytime temps were in the middle to upper 80's (it was 63 during a short
rain shower about 3 PM yesterday) and the late afternoon temps were cool
enough that some people were putting on long pants and windbreakers,
nights were very cool. Some trails had to be changed because the USFS
closed the national forest to the public, but Ft Stanton is 33,000+ acres
of BLM and it is not closed and will not be closed. This is a beautiful
and historic area (Billy the Kid, Lincoln County War, Apache Wars, etc)
and the area has phenomenal beauty to go along with its history.

Trails look good, lots of cross country with a few connecting 4 wheel
drive roads thrown in...Base Camp is beautiful and evening meals are
included with your entry - additional meals can be purchased. Feed
Store has lots of excellent hay - grass, grass/alfalfa, and alfalfa - at
reasonable prices (I think Roger Taylor has set up a deal to deliver hay
orders to Base Camp - if not it is only 4 miles from camp). All needs
such as - gas & diesel, ice, groceries, & dry goods, restaurants, etc -
can be purchased in Capitan (4 miles from Base Camp) or in Ruidoso -
about 30 minutes from Base Camp (24 hour Walmart, etc).

A number of people are already at Base Camp helping mark and clear
trails: Kasemeyers (Tenn), Barnetts (Tenn), Eilands (TX), Taylors (Ride
Managers, NM), Bill Wilson (Ind), Tom Manaraze (NM), Jo Fanelli (NM),
with several more friends expected today thru Wed to help finish trails
Kevin Waters, Bob Wenzel, Pat Oliva, Ashley & Kathy, and others.
