[RC] Micronutrients and behavior - Lif Strand

A friend of mine bought a QH cross gelding for trail riding while she
decides if she wants to do endurance. The horse, Go-Go, is well trained,
does barrels and other gymkhana type events, and is built lean enough that
she can start conditioning him for distance riding. Go-Go was a push
button horse when Sue got him and still is, but he's developed a problem
that I'm thinking is nutrition related.

We all know that feeding "hot" feed - grain, even alfalfa - can make some
horses nutty. Go-Go has his perfect days, and he has days when he just
seems to be nuts - when he's jiggy, nervous, spooky. He'll buck on those
days, spook and spin, and in general be horrible to ride. Yet the rest of
the time he's a mild-mannered, fun, reliable horse to ride.

Go-Go is being fed grass hay and alfalfa. Sue cut him off of grain months
ago when this first started. I'm wondering if he's lacking something
nutritionally that might make him hypersensitive occasionally. Thoughts?
