    >As a newbie who hasn't even gotten to the trail yet, I will agree with you on the general impression that LD'ers are not as important as the longer distancers just by the comments that have been made since I joined this list a little over a week ago. My whole "happy" attitude about once again joining a sport I loved is wavering a little. When I rode almost 30 years ago I don't believe there were 25-milers. I think it's a great addition for people like me who need a place to start or start again, but are a little too chicken to put their horse out there for the first time, not knowing how they will do. But I'm a little scared by some of the comments to think I might get run over by somebody or get kicked out of of place in the vet line, etc. Maybe there should be different vets for the LD'ers? Someone PLEASE reassure me that this is still a nice sport with nice people and I'll have a good time. I really want to ride again.

This topic comes up periodically, and generates a lot of heat, but
it's the same old arguments over and over. Personally, I don't think
I deserve the same recognition for having hiked up Pikes Peak as the
people do who have climbed Mt. Everest, but it seems many people today
aren't happy with equal opportunity, they insist on equal outcome.
They want the same recognition for doing less. Ah, well, its all been
said over and over and will surely be argued over again. Don't let it
deter you; we still have a great time out on the trail.

I'll also comment on this point: I've long believed that at
multi-distance rides, if a vet check gets backed up the riders going
the longer distance should get priority over those going the shorter
distance. Especially, riders returning to the trail should have
priority over riders who have finished. That just seems like good
common sense and common courtesy to me. YMMV.
