Re: [RC] Winning and Racing LDs - Kristene Smuts

First, let me say that I don't know your rules as intimately as you do, so you may have this in your rules already, but I'm going to give an example of a recent rule change to our LD riders - 30 and 60 kilometers. 80 km and above rides are based on competition rules.

Before the rule change, the 30s and 60s were awarded placings, from 1 through to the last entrant. However, they could not be picked for BC, only the 80s were eligible.

The rule change was that no longer may the 30s and 60s be placed - their times were noted on the completion certificates and names read out in no particular order. The riders collected their certificates from the pile after the announcements.

This caused major outcries, especially from those who felt that they should be awarded their 1st place for completing a 30km in 1 hour 20 mins! Being anonymous with an "achievement" like that did not wash well. But, the miffyness has abated and hopefully we'll see better times - read slower - next year.

One of the reasons this rule was changed, was that it was found that some riders took it upon themselves to "better" their record from year to year and never actually moved up in distance. They didn't see endurance for what it is, but saw it as a personal long distance race to be completed faster and faster - they remained in the 30km distance year after year and often with a different horse every year.

Just a suggestion that you could use??

    Kristene
