Re: [RC] How Sad - Barbara McCrary

While I wouldn't require riders in our event to use helmets, let me share an
experience that tells me "I won't get on any horse for any distance without
    first putting on a helmet."
My husband and I were riding one day some years ago, on a flat trail at a
flat-footed walk. I was ahead by about 15 feet when I heard a scramble and
a thud and looked around to see my husband on the ground with the horse
standing looking at him. Husband was unconscious and of course couldn't
answer my frantic calls. Then he came to and the sound of his voice was the
most terrifying thing I have ever heard come out of a human throat...an
awful groan that was indescribable. To make a long story short, the horse
apparently had tripped over an exposed tree root and fallen. My husband's
only recollection was of the saddle coming up to meet him. He hit the back
of his head on the tree root, split his scalp and had a concussion. He
still does not remember about two hours of his life. He was not wearing a
helmet. After much arguing, coercing, and nagging, I finally have him
trained to put on a helmet every time he rides. If such damage can occur at
a walk on flat ground, what do you think can happen at speed on rocky
    ground?
We were lucky that his injuries were not any more serious that they were,
but for a few seconds on that day, I was re-programming my life to live it
as a widow. Have I made a point here?
