    Re: [RC] Preloading electrolytes - Kristene Smuts

    >>So I'm a little puzzled as to what's in an elyte formula that would be
    formulated for an alkaline stomach---unless, as you said you're working from
    memory, it was actually just meant that it doesn't contain any sodium
    bicarb??? Which again has to do with blood pH rather than the pH of the GI
    tract, and is entirely appropriate for endurance horses.>>

    OK, so I eventually remembered to bring the tub in to work, so here are the ingredients
    *****
    g/kg
    Sodium = 118.0
    Potassium = 209.8
    Magnesium = 9.8
    Sulphur = 13.0
    Calcium = 40.5
    Chloride = 438.8
    Minerals derived from : Potassium Chloride, Sodium Chloride, Ammonium Chloride, Calcium Carbonate and Magnesium Sulphate.
    Feeding guidelines :
    To replace lost salts, mix 45g (two scoopfuls ... which I didn't get, but I used a tablespoon) of 'lytes into the horses daily feed. The dose can be split between the morning and night feeds. Alternatively the dose can be mixed into the drinking water or administered as a drench.

    Maximum dosage in a single application should be limited to 90g. Maximum recommended concentration in the drinking water is 45g per 25 liters. Maximum recommended concentration in drench solutions is 90g per 4 liters of water.
    ******
    So, there you have it. How would this compare - good or bad - to the 'lyte mix recipe Karen posted a few days ago? Would I be better off mixing my own or using the bought stuff?

    Smiles
    Kristene
