[RC] new topic re green horses - Deanna German

Answering Susan's original question, it should be made clear to anyone
following this discussion that IAHA CTR rules and NATRC rules differ
considerably. I'm a bigger fan of the IAHA rules than I am of NATRC and most
other CTR groups. I'm a real big fan of AHAO rules.

IF the vet and lay judge uses the IAHA (or AHAO) rules and goes over the
horse very carefully, examining every nook and cranny, IAHA (or AHAO) CTR
can be a great learning experience, providing information that a rider
(novice or not) might overlook in their horse. If they don't go over the
horse carefully, it's a nice training opportunity, but a missed opportunity
    for info.

Having observed both a CTR and endurance format, I think CTR is good
training. CTR enforces a sane pace for the rider who might be tempted to
overrun their horse (yes, I've seen it). I've seen a few newbie endurance
riders (endurance and LD) who could've benefited from CTR.

Hmmmm.... so maybe CTR is good for the newbie rider and doesn't matter so
    much for the newbie horse.....

Okay, so I was cruising the IAHA website and musing about the distance
programs they're (finally) sponsoring, including the competitive trail
    riding and mounted orienteering.

I was curious how many endurance riders cross-over and do both endurance as
well as CTR? I know at least a few of y'all do from previous conversations?
Any thoughts/comments/experiences with using CTR/MO to give experience to
green (not total babies, just green)horses prior to the rodeo of an AERC
start? Or do you think it's better to just throw 'em into the deep end of
    the pool?<g>

    Any thoughts or stories?
