Re: [RC] Ulcer Research/USA Druggies? - Truman Prevatt

Seems to me that any test protocol that requires withholding food for 12 hours and withhold water for 6 hours is counter indicated for a horse going on an endurance ride. I don't know of many people who would follow this protocol if they were planning on doing the ride. Seems that if this is a requirement for a valid test, that the utility of these test will be marginal at best.

Is that how you see it Bob or did I miss something?

Your references state<<<Prior to submitting to an endoscopic
examination for ulcers, a horse will have his food withheld
for about 12 hours, and he won't be allowed to drink water
for about six hours before the exam.>>>

<<<a horse whose routine remains relatively consistent from
day to day probably isn't going to have problems with
    ulcers.>>>

<<<In the mid and late 1980's sophisticated endoscopes were
used to demonstrate that up to 50% of young foals and up to
90% of racehorses developed gastric lesions>>>>

<<<This condition is present in up to 50% of foals, 95% of
weanlings after halter breaking, and 85% of race horses in
    training>>>

I do not believe this supports your contention most of us
are theoretically already riding horses with ulcers.

I also do not believe the intubation to look for ulcers will
be all that successful when done at/after an endurance ride
as very few, if any, owners will with hold food and water as
    is required.

On what authority do you base this statement? What data
supports this conjecture? If this is true then is this not a
very good argument against the sport?
