The question is not "which gait/speed is best for your horse".The question is
more like "which of the two gaits is BETTER,least likely to end in
disaster, when traveling of neccesity very quickly in that aforementioned
horrid terrain?".This is not a "trail rider" situation,
Hi Ray!
I think your question above has already been answered by you to your
satisfaction. You prefer the running walk and canter, which you have seen
successfully used over rough terrain by your scouts.
My opinion is that I can safely ride rough terrain in either the foxtrot or
running walk, in fact, the foxtrot is promoted by the breed association as a
gait for rough terrain. But I would use whatever gait the horse I was riding
was most efficient and surefooted at. I would certainly not feel comfortable
generalizing and flatly stating that the running walk was the gait of choice
for that terrain. That appears to be your opinion, and if so, you should be
looking for that horse that can perform as you wish. They are certainly out
there, whether they are registered TWH or MFT.
Hope that settles this for now, and my apologies to ridecamp for dragging
this out.
