    .........and that is the crux of the whole issue.  People with integrity
    will treat their horses fairly whether there is money involved or not.
    People without integrity have been known to kill their horses over a $2
    trophy, regardless of the sport.......  (And believe me, a crippled QH that
    goes to the canner's after being drugged up to compete through the last
    roping of the year and can't walk anymore is just as dead as an endurance
    horse ridden past his limits to an irretrievable metabolic crash.  And quite
    frankly, I think the former happens in a higher percentage of competing
    horses than does the latter...  Just my personal observation...  )
    
    To what I've seen, the more time the rider spends with the horse in pursuit
    of the sport--be it endurance, three-day eventing, whatever--the better the
    care the rider takes of the horse, perhaps because he gets to know the horse
    as an individual entity, perhaps because he has more time invested, maybe a
    bit of both.  The quicker the sport is over, the more disposable the horse,
    it seems....
