RE: Teeth, worms and the XP 2001

1. Dentist - definitely needed by my horse every six months. I let
it go too long and had it done at nine months and he was cranky with
the bit. But..... my mare has never had her teeth done and she's
just being a broodmare. Shame on me. But she's definitely too fat
right now and not in my care because she's on a breed lease so it's
not something I sweat bullets over.

2. Worming. I tried the Panacur 5 day purge. I think they package
it as the "PowerPack" or something. Eleanor Kellon says you can
use Safeguard which is the same product but cheaper since it's marketed
for cattle. Seemed to make quite a difference in condition. Probably
October and March with zimectrin every two months in between will be
my standard protocol from now on. I'm not likely to use Quest anymore.
There were some horror stories re: Quest circulating around and even
the vet that I talked to at the last shot clinic recommended the
Panacur Purge in lieu of Quest.

3. Good luck finding crew! I wish I could just take off and do it.

Kathy

On the dentist:

My dentist says every six months, my vet says annually, so we usually
compromise and have him come every 9 months.

On worming, here's what I do (I'm sure everyone has there own):
January - ivermectin (they are all made by Merck, by the cheapest)
Ivermectin is good for 60 days.

March - A benzadole family of wormer (Safeguard, Panacur, Anthelcide or
the
like). This is good for 45 days.

Mid-April - Strongid or Rotectin 2 (pyrantel pamoate). This is also
good
for 45 days.

June - Either Ivermectin again or you can use Quest. Ivermectin is good
for
60 days, Quest is 90 days.

August(if you did Ivermectin in June) - A benzadole family of wormer
(Safeguard, Panacur, Anthelcide or the like). This is good for 45 days.
If
you used Quest in June, skip this and go straight to September.

Mid-September - Double (or triple) does of Strongid or Rotectin 2
(pyrantel
pamoate). This is the only way to kill tapeworms. My vet used to
recommend
a double dose, but now recommends a triple dose. This is good for 45
days.

November - ivermectin (good for 60 days).

Another way to do it is to just rotate the four types of products
(ivermectin/benzadole/pyrantel/Quest using the time frames that the
products
are good for). The tubes are usually rated up to either 1100 or 1200
pounds. I always give the entire tube, even if the horse is only 800 or
900
lbs. There has been significant testing on these products by the
manufacturers and they are very safe. Most of these products toxicity
levels are reported at anywhere between 10 - 50 times the recommended
dosages. Something that has toxicity at 3 - 5 times the recommended
dosage
is not considered a safe product and usually is administered by a vet.
(Sources for this information come directly from the manufactures and
The
Compendia of Veterinary Medicine).
