Re: Selenium & Vitamin E Supplements

You have to try hard to overdose vitamin E, so don't worry about it. 1 mg
of selenium per day is the standard rule of thumb to start, but the amounts
provided in the hay you're feeding can vary widely depending on where it's
grown. Best method is to ask your vet (preferably an endurance vet) what he
recommends for your area, bcked up by some serum selenium assays, not too
expensive and worth the info. Some horses seem to require more than others,
but its not a mineral that you want to go feeding willy nilly, as its
cumulative and can cause serious toxicity.

I'd say assuming youre in the So Cal area, start with 1 mg of Se per day and
see if you notice any improvement, in the meantime, ask your vet for his/her
recommendations and follow up with serum assay in a few weeks.
