RE: legal or not?

Title: legal or not?
Disclaimer: I am not a veterinarian.

AERC Rule:
13. The integrity of Endurance Competition requires that the equine is not influenced by any drug, medication or veterinary treatment. Endurance equines must compete entirely on their natural ability. AERC prohibits from competition equines who contain evidence of the administration of abnormal substances or of normal substances in abnormal amounts (exogenously administered compounds even if normally found endogenously). Since the complete effects of such administration cannot be known, the fairness and safety require the prohibition of such practices.

MSM, glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate - these are not drugs per se. They are
considered foot additives. And the key here is 'Endurance  Competition' - you can
do whatever you want in the day-to-day maintenance of your horse. Phenolbutazone
is one of the drugs that test - and even so, AERC does not prohibit the use of bute
in day-to-day management, rehabilitation, etc. What AERC does prohibit is COMPETING
on a horse that has evidence of therapeutic levels of bute in it's bloodstream.

Rather than getting in a panic over the use of MSM, glucosamine, biotin, etc - substances
you can order via catalogs rather than veterinary prescription, talk
to your veterinarian, or contact a member of the AERC veterinary committee and
ask them directly if what you are doing is considered a drug, medication or veterinary
treatment.

Ok, I'm pretty much confused now.  I know MSM is not "legal" for endurance rides but are we saying that glucosamine and chondroitin are also not legal?  If so, how long does it take to get out of the bloodstream so it's not testable?  If I can locate my rule book, I'll reread rule 13 but if someone could clarify, I'd appreciate it.
