Re: RC: Rider vs. Horse size

Patti,
  I'm also 5'9 and 200+ lbs and I ride a 15 hh mare. I have, many times,
ridden smaller horses. The only problem I have had is making sure the
horse isn't too short-coupled. One of my boys was 15hh and still wore a
68 blanket! I had a real hard time riding him as I felt I was going to
be pitched over his head at every movement! You don't need height as
much as you need size. Make sense?

Hello all! Let me preface this by saying as a newbie to endurance, ridecamp has been amazingly educational! I am currently looking for an endurance horse and have my eye on one in particular. However my question is this: I am 5'9" and 200lbs, am on a diet (but aren't we all) the Arab I'm looking at, was bred for endurance, is of average bone and is about 14.3 (tops) His owner says he should grow some more. He's almost 5 years old. What do you all think? My background is in hunter/jumpers, therefore anything under 15.3 is too small for me but that is aesthetically-speaking. At this point I don't know if I am ever planning on doing 100s but definitely want to try LDs and maybe someday a 50. On the other hand, I've read a lot of ya'lls stories and seems as if a lot of you started out saying the same thing as me.

BTW, I am also the one who asked about volunteering etiquette awhile back. I did volunteer at the Osceola ride and learned more about horse care in 2 days then I have learned in the past 10 years. Truly an awesome experience!
Thanks,
Patti
