This sounds like a farrier problem...not a "if-you-should-use-shoes-or-not."  If you want to ride a lot of miles in the season, you should protect your horses feet in someway if the terrain is bad....not wait until the horse gets sore footed to find out that you "should-have" used hoof protection.  Thats inhumane to do so..
