Re: Needing expertise from 100 milers

Okey-dokey... I gotta tell everyone about Erica's last 50 mile ride... by
the time it was over, it was pretty close to a "100 mile experience", so I
don't think she has too much to worry about in getting prepared for her
first "real" 100...

We were at the Apache Kid Trail ride in south-central New Mexico a few weeks
ago... the IAHA 100 & 50 mile championships were going on the same weekend.
We kind of hooked up on Friday night & discussed riding the non-IAHA 55
miler together on Saturday since we were both riding pretty "inexperienced"
horses. I led my horse over to her trailer on Saturday morning just as she
was finishing saddling up... she had her halter around the horse's neck &
had walked off to take care of a couple of last minute details... when she
came back to put her bridle on, the horse pulled back slightly & the halter
fell off... he started walking away, but before long he was cantering
away... I mounted my mare & followed - hoping that once he got out of camp
he'd look back & see my horse & come to her, but he disappeared over a hill
& by the time I got to the top, he was no where in sight....

I ended up doing the 55 miler since there was nothing I could do to help
Erica... her horse was found galloping down a dirt road about 1 p.m. that
afternoon. In the meantime, she joined IAHA & entered the horse in the IAHA
50 mile competition on Sunday - she finished somewhere in the top ten.

I figure the hours she spent worrying over her horse while it was missing
plus the hours she spent getting the horse ready to do the ride on Sunday
plus the hours she spent actually doing the ride on Sunday was at least as
stressful as a 100 miler! Go for it Erica - it'll be a piece of cake!
