About the only advice is, if it works, use it.
The bit/hack question is entirely between you & your horse. I might be 
easier for the horse to eat & drink without a bit or shanked hack, but 
control comes first.
Breastcollar & crupper help on hills, you can usually ride with a looser 
girth.
