Re: RC: hock-arthritis?

We have a paint gelding that had this problem. I
opted to let it fuse on it's own (money played a big
part in this choice) While it was fusing, which for
him was a 2 year process, we kept him on Grand Flex. I
could sure tell a difference when he was on it and
when he wasn't. At the time he was a show horse and
kept up in a stall most of the day/night. I just
turned him out 24/7 so he could keep the hock working
and not let it stiffen up sitting in a stall.
Occasionally he would have a bad day and I would give
him some aspirin. Other than that I just let nature
take it's course. Once his hock fused he was 100%
sound on it and had no problems jumping.

<DIV>Hi All,</DIV>
<DIV>My 14 year&nbsp;old&nbsp;tb gelding has been
diagnosed with arthritis in his right hock.&nbsp; The
joint has already started to fuse, which many of you
know&nbsp;can&nbsp;be&nbsp;good and bad. (and
painful)&nbsp; I had him injected last Thursday with
hyalaouronic acid (sp) and steroid.&nbsp; He is now
running around like a two year old--just feeling
great!&nbsp; However it is debatable how long it will
last and with the joint fusing it is not likely that
they will be able to get another needle in for
injecting. My main concern is keeping him comfortable
and pain free.&nbsp; I wanted to hear
peoples&nbsp;experience (successful or
unsuccessful)with this and what you have done for
treatments, (joint fusion surgery, supplements,
excercises). Any insight would be appreciated!</DIV>
<DIV>Thank you,</DIV>
