Susan or others

Does anybody know if clover in hay is OK for horses?

Thanks

Skip,
Depends on the type of clover.  Ladino/white clover is the most commonly fed and is pretty good stuff, mixed in with other grasses.  Sweet clover has a high coumarin content which converts to dicoumarol (an anticoagulant used in rat poisons) if it gets moldy.  Red clover can sometimes get a mold called black patch that produces an alkaloid that causes excessive salivation in livestock.  Alsike can cause photosensitization (sunburn on the nose and white legs and such.)

Hope this helps.
