Re: RC: Re: hydration and hay type

The vets in this area (and we are fortunate to have some excellent vets) all
recommend for diet the best grass hay we can find. They all say that there
are many attendant problems with horses fed straight alfalfa as their major
feed source. Many of the "show" people do feed straight alfalfa because it
puts such a beautiful "bloom" on horses' coats and they look fantastic. But
looks can mask some serious internal problems.
A few years ago, I was at Oregon State University teaching hospital with one
of my horses who had injured her leg and I saw a horse (an Arabian) who was
recovering from surgery to remove an enterlith. It resembled a large
cantelope and was hard as a rock. This had formed in the horse's intestine
and was blocking it and could have been fatal. (a little help Susan?) The
owner (of a show barn) explained to me that she had told the vets that she
thought that the horse had an enterlith and she was proud that she had
diagnosed it correctly. She said that she was pretty certain as a couple of
years ago, one of her horses (might have been this same one) had the exact
same surgery. She had been told that it was caused by feeding straight
alfalfa. She still feeds straight alfalfa. Go figure!
