  I was always told, and found it to be true, that a horse will drink when 
it's thirsty. When your guy comes along a bit further in his training, he'll 
learn to pace himself and will learn pretty quickly to drink when it's 
available. Get him out on the trails (where there is water) and really ride. 
He'll figure it it out.
