Re: RC: Horse won't trot

Melissa...

Round up a nice dressage whip. Find a nice long board fence. Take the
lead line in your right hand and start walking down the fence with the
horse between you and the fence. Hold the whip in your left hand, butt
forward. Start trotting yourself and "kiss" to the horse. If she
doesn't pick up the trot, reach around with your left hand and smack her
gently on the butt and continue to kiss. Don't turn your body, just keep
trotting....even in place...and keep smacking till she picks up the
trot. The fence keeps her from moving away from the whip. When she
picks up the trot, go 100 yards or so, stop, turn, switch hands with the
lead and the whip and do it going the other way. This has the advantage
of teaching your horse to trot on EITHER side. (You always have to train
both sides of a horse) Pretty soon, soon as you kiss and start trotting,
she will "fast forward" to "here comes the whip" and trot off with you.
She's just being a mare. <grin>
