White Hooves/Black Hooves (from Barb Peck)

I just gor back from Ca. having had the opportunity
to ride with and assist Patty Stiller, a Natural Balance horse
shoer. I handled a BUNCH of feet..

All black hooves are only pigmented black thru half
of the wall (horn). The other half, which is closest
to the laminae, is composed of a denser material, and
is white (lacking pigment).
The laminae is what most people call the white line.
So, black hooves are really not pigmented black all the
way thru the wall.

This is true of all black hooves, and the color
change in the wall can be clearly
seen if you pick up the bare-foot of a freshly trimmed
hoof. The change in horn density (the white part of the
horn being denser)
can also be seen if you look closely.

The horses with the really good horn quality
and width (like 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick wall)
all had a wider un-pigmented part of the horn
than pigmented... regardless of the external hoof color.

Just some tid-bits of info for y' all !!

Barb
