RE: SUMMER BREEZE

Yep, it is true, every state requires health certificates to travel across
borders with equines. Some are more stringent than Kentucky, requiring 14
day certificates, instead of 30! All that I know of can ask for Coggins
tests, as well, and I believe there are a few out West that are now
requiring rabies vaccinations on horses. So, technically speaking, every
time we cross the border outside of our home state, we SHOULD have a
veterinary health certificate which meets the requirement of that state, AND
any others we may pass through. How many of us actually do that? A raise of
hands please???? Bet it's a minority:) I even asked my vet how worried I
should be about health certificates. He said not very, UNLESS I'm traveling
to Florida. Apparently, with the influx this spring of the renegade Kentucky
horses running from the cyanide poisoning caused from the caterpillars
Florida has lowered the boom.

The reason why DBDR, the sponsor of the Summer Breeze ride, has tried so
hard to let potential riders know about the veterinary health certificate
rule is because last year there was an Ag official at our ride who was on a
mission, to say the least. He did his best to make life miserable for anyone
out-of-state who lacked a health certificate. Basically, he failed. Duane
Barnett, DVM, the head vet, worked his charm, and settled the man. However,
he busied himself by emptying a pad of "warning" notices and promised that
"next" year he would not be so "lenient." We just want to be certain that he
doesn't hold true to his word. No doubt, he WILL be there checking. He
always is. What kind of mood he will be in remains to be seen. In years
past, he was quite mellow. Last year, he blamed his temperament on a recent
crackdown by the Governor.

So, Angie.... come on ahead and join us. These Kentucky rides are becoming
rather fond of your presence! I'm not sure we can do without you!

O.K. Since people are venting about Gov. requirements...here's my rant
for the day. I want to go to Summer Breeze this weekend...I've got to put
up hay tomorrow and not sure if I'll finish in time. But since it's in
KENTUCKY I have to have a health certificate. Just called the local vet
who did my coggins to see if I could run by and get one. Sure, bring
your horse RIGHT NOW since he won't be in tomorrow. I'd already spent
$15 getting one for my daughter's horse to go to KY in June. It just ran
out. Put both horses in and he wanted TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS each to take
their stupid temperature so they could go to the promised land of KY! I
said forget it and came home. There's another vet on the way who charges
$15 but that makes me have to leave after 8 AM. Heck, I don't even know
if I get to go. I wonder how many people pass on the Kentucky rides just
because the state has this rule. >fume<
