strange crusty stuff on my mare's nose...

Deanna German finishis2win@columbus.rr.com
Groomed my mare Monday evening; she looked fine.

Last evening (two days later), she had small, bumpy encrustations in a
small strip between her nostrils and more of them around another nostril.
They looked like an old, itchy rash.

They didn't seem to bother her, but she really did not like me touching
them. Not jerking away, but just annoyed. (She usually lets me play with
her lips, muzzle and nostrils.) I left them alone, didn't put Corona or
bag balm on them since I figured it would just come off in her hay or her
feed anyway, or she would wipe it off on a leg.

Anyone have any ideas what this is? Is there anything I can do about it?
My guess is that it's a reaction to something, but nothing's changed in
her environment. I haven't walked the pasture, but no other horse in the
barn has this problem.

I'll be gone this weekend helping at a CTR and I'd like to tell my fellow
boarders and barn owner when to call the vet if that's needed. Or at least
how to keep my mare comfy if these things get painful or itchy.

TIA for all responses. I'm lurking, so responses to RC are fine.

Deanna (Ohio)
