I'm using a product called Equine Poridon which is working quite well.  
Horses don't seem to object to it at all - you put a thin bead of it along 
the top line of the horse.  I got desperate about the all the ticks this 
year.   However, I HATE pouring neurotoxic insecticides on my horse!!
