In my book, you are definitely doing the right thing.  As Trilby says, Going slow is the way to go if you want your horse to last.  I have observed people who go out and win 25s then try to move up.  Their horses still think that they are only going to have to go 25 fast miles and they have nothing left for the next 25.  I am a firm believer in starting slow.  Then if your horses vet scores are all As, you should be able to pick up the pace.  Finishing strong on a great looking horse(metabolically speaking) is the goal of our sport.  50s should be fun for you and your horse.
