Beth,
     Your always going to have those "Except Then" points of view.  Of 
course, you will notice that it will be because, they have a special interest 
or need that opposes a change.  LD's are a needed thing in our sport as to 
exactly why you've mention above.
     One good thing, if they do go directly to the 50 miler, at least if will 
be on a 5 year old horse and not a 4 year old horse.
