Certainly with all due respect, while a mare left open for a number of years
may be referred to may be referred to also as "barren". I have never in 32
years herd of a mare who has indeed produced a foal as being "maiden". While
it may be a matter of semantics, it also weighs somewhat into a vet's opinion
as to whether or not a mare should be bred. An 18 year old true maiden would
certainly be more problematic than an 18 year old who had previously
produced, say 4 foals, and was then left open for 3-5 years. That isn't the
same as a maiden, technically or otherwise. One needs to be clear with one's
vet on this issue.
