There is a product called Instead. It's a cervical cap, designed to contain menstrual flow. It doesn't hurt, you don't have to mess with your body chemistry, and it lasts about twice as long as a tampon, so you don't have to change it as often. You can get it at Walgreens and many drug and supermarkets. On very heavy days, use one of these and carry a pad in case you need it. The only drawback to Instead is that it's messy to change.
