There is some debate about this.  Clinically, I think it is more a matter of 
observing that horses with low selenium simply are not symptomatic when not 
worked or stressed in some manner--they simply exist in a deficient state.  
Hence people "think" that they need more when worked.  Once levels are up to 
a normal state, I've never observed any great need to give MORE selenium 
because of work.
