Re: bareback pads

Are you talking about the kind that has a flat nylon webbing strap with a
totally inadequate metal buckle, the kind that is serrated like teeth to
hold the strap tight? If you have a sewing machine, scavange two rings from
an old western cinch and sew these (using very sturdy thread, I've used
fishing line) to the saddle, just cut the strap off, long enough on each
side to sew on the rings (can you picture this? I am afraid I am not
explaining it well) So you have the bareback pad, with the original web
strap girth still sew over the top, but ending on each side in rings. Now
attach your western rigging to these rings, tie strap on one side, billet
strap on the other. Add a western cinch and you have much better rigging.
Keep in mind that a tree (in a saddle) will redistribute your weight onto
the large muscles of your horses's back, off his spine. And a bareback pad
does not do this. If you are a lightweight, and your horse is not a baby,
probably not a problem. When I was nine I got my first horse and my folks
couldn't afford the saddle for three more months. Do you think I waited? :-)
