I have heard that the reason to replace a helmet is that the foam used in 
them deteriorates over time, and may not protect your head the way the 
standards call for.  In the past I have crashed  before my helmet got to the 
5 yr point.  Now that I'm a "better" or at least luckier rider, I'll have to 
get a new one soon.  jeri
