RE: Clubbed foot/feet and endurance

My horse has a "clubbish" foot and we are doing well this year,
but it took a lot of managed care to get to this point. It was
a very multi-factorial issue with him, but the bottom line is
that it definitely affected his body balance which had a negative
affect all the way down the line.

We put a rimpad on his other foot to even him out. He does have
a funny way of going and we were pulled for lameness at the 44 mile
vet check of our first 50 miler last year. This year no rimpad,
and we have completed two 50 mile rides rather nicely. I always
hold my breath during the trot out, but so far the experienced
ride vets out there seem to be okay with it. He does hitch up
with the opposite diagonal hind leg and I really don't know if
that is related to the club foot.

My gut feeling is that club foot can be overcome with proper
management. We are looking forward to many more miles together.

K.

Just finished ready Nancy Loving, DVM's "Go the Distance" which I
thought
was very good. However, I noticed she never mentioned anything about
clubbed foot or feet when discussing the hoof and/or leg faults. Since
a
clubbed foot or "Bey Shah foot" is common in Arabians, I found this
curious.
Or, is it that with proper hoof care, this aberration really does not
pose a
problem?
