Re: African Horse Sickness

Well for me, I usually put mine into horse sickness end of september - mid october, due to the "Rhino ride" this year I'll do mine at the end of october, This means they are out by end november/beginning december which gives me two months to get them working again before the first ride at the end of January. I don't usually train at all during horse sickness except for the occassional walk/trot around the block in the 1st and 3rd week of each shot, as they have worked hard throughout the endurance season and i see this as time for a well deserved rest, I know of some people who do very light riding throughout the vaccine period without any side effect, but I am not prepared to take the chance. If your horse is fit the six week layoof won't affect them too much, they come back quite quickly.

Subject: RC: African Horse Sickness

Hope all non-South Africans will forgive me for posting this to Ridecamp, but I was hoping to get as much response as possible, and I know there can't just be me and Celeste who subscribe to RC (can there?)

I was just wondering the following:

1.  When are you going to put your horses into horse sickness?  During my SJ / DQ days, it wasn't an issue as there is no real season to speak of, and last eventing season, I only came in at the end.  I've always preferred to put them in at the beginning of September.

2.  How do you condition whilst they're in HS?

3.  Have you had any problems conditioning while in HS or just after?

Thanks,
Tracey
