I thought it was pretty simple... Tom did not say if you didn't go out to win 
you wern't a horseman... but .... If you rode your horse beyond what he is 
capible of... beyond what you have done in the triaining... you wern't a 
horseman, you would in fact be being cruel to your horse.  And as a horseman 
it is your responsibility to greedly absorb any and all information that 
could help your horse withstand the rigors of training and compatition, 
wether or not you are going for the win, or just an afternoon picnic ride...
