RE: Arabian S hackamore



Rating means to follow at a prescribed distance and speed from something in
front of the horse.  In team roping, the horse has to learn to follow the
steer at exactly the same velocity as the steer and at a distance set by the
rider.  In endurance, we don't want our horse to be sniffing the butt of the
horse in front of them and we want to maintain the same pace (normally).  A
horse that knows how to rate will allow the rider to set the speed and
distance from a leading horse.

I've seen the word "rate" in catalog descriptions of hackamores. Just
what in the heck does that mean?
