leg sweats, paints, etc

When a horse gets a pull or strain the initial treatment of ice and bute to
keep the inflammation under control makes sense to me, but why the counter -
irritants afterwards? Is this just useless 'voodoo' or does it do any good? I
don't see why walking around grazing 24/7 to keep the circulation good in the
legs isn't sufficient.
