Re: RC: RE: kids mounting tall horses

Along the same lines, but in the opposit direction (dismounting):

My sister used to use my "old" (15 yo) App, about 15.1, for goat tying,
generally easily performing that nice smooth step off at top speed where you hit
the ground in perfect running stride. Me, I always figured 'tis much better to
stay atop a moving horse than deliberately bail... It used to tickle me to
death to see some of those girls, that couldn't jump off of their horses, hit
the ground and eat a face full of sand before scrambling up to catch the goat.

Until the aforementioned darling sister shot into the area one night at a dead
run, balanced correctly on the near stirrup waiting the jump off point and the
in-skirt d ring on the off side that the cinch was attached to, broke. I have a
great picture of said horse in full gallop right beside sister lying face down
in the arena with now junked saddle dragging the ground under the horses belly.
Won't have been so bad except the horse wasn't wearing a breastcollar and was
wearing a tie down and so said dragging saddle was attached to his head!
Stopping him was a treat, holding him still to strip the ruined tack was also
rather fun. I can't seem to remember if she tied the goat or not. <g>

Didn't seem to teach my sister anything. I saw her practicing this step off
manuever with her barrel horse just last weekend... I still think a rider
should keep their butt in the saddle until the horse comes to a complete stop
and the fasten seat belt light goes out!

ah, shucks, you guys. you've got it WAAAAAAAAY better than these little
local ranch kids that partake in the local ranch rodeos doin' goat
tying'
etc -- i mean 4 and 5 year old kids riding these big regular ranch size
quarter type horses. most just slide down the side of the horse to
dismount but when it comes to mounting they have a rope tied to the
saddle
horn and they simply CLIMB up the side of the horse. some get REAL
upset
if an adult comes to try to help them! it's a real crack up to watch
'em!

now personally, i've ridden several horses in my lifetime that have
withers
(or lack thereof) and backs that dictate that i can not mount w/o
getting
up on something or the saddle slides sideways. my old arab gelding,
gone
for 3+ years now, bless him, learned early on that when i climbed up on
something he sidepassed over to me all on his own.

course i used to ride him down the driveway to get the mail with nothing
at
all on him too -- well, maybe he had his day sheet on. same horse and
rider betty couldn't catch in the river a few years ago!
