I was confronted with a Russian Orlov that was about 16:1 hh on the 120 k 
ride I rode in Bremen, Germany, a few years ago.  (I am 5'1" and chubby!)  
First time I met this horse was the day before the ride, and first time I 
actually got on him was 10 minutes before the ride started.... Hooo boy...  
And lemme tell you, that country is FLAT!!  The biggest elevation change was, 
I think, the horse overpass over the Bremen freeway...  NO chance of just 
getting on from the uphill side, which always sufficed with the taller horses 
I rode as a kid!  <g>  I was sure glad this was a sweet horse, as he suffered 
my clamboring aboard from a perch atop an inverted bucket at the start, and 
at each check, I had to find "something"--can remember maneuvering him into 
ditches, up to the backs of cars to use bumpers, and a couple of other little 
tricks.  He was very patient with it all, and we managed to complete...  :-)
