Re: RC: RE: Tall horses & MOUNTING!

I haven't tried cheater stirrups, but I did try using a Bareback Buddy over top
of the saddle, and hated it. Even though I was able to mount fine on many
occassions, I had this horrible feeling that I was about to get hung up in all
of those extra straps.

I'm not particualrily short, and my horses aren't particularily tall, I just
can't left my leg up high enough. All I need is about 5 extra inches, so
usually a ditch of slight slope works for me.

Yes, I just forego all pride and look for the nearest stump. I just have
to choose carefully where I plan to get back on my horse! I had taken
a lot of hunt seat lessons, therefore don't have a thing about using
a mounting block like some of our weekend cowboys in our area. It also
helps because there are a lot of short little girls riding 17H+
thoroughbreds
and warmbloods so I don't think that I stick out too much!

Yeppers, and jeans don't work for me either when it comes to mounting.

At my last endurance ride, a guy with an old style metal construction
hard hat yelled out to me "hey no. 59, you've got a problem!" I held
my breathe and said "What?" "Well your horse is too d**m tall and
you're too d**m short!" I just replied "no s**t!" Then we all burst
out laughing.

I thought about getting a pair of those "cheater" stirrups but I ride
with cages on my stirrups and don't know if that would work. Anyone
tried that?

Just curious, Kathy.. how do you get on your horse?? Do you have
difficulty?
I'm 5'2 (with short legs!)and my QH gelding is a tad over 15.1hh.. I have
to
do the splits and literally climb/pull myself up into the saddle if I have
to
mount from the ground.. and if I'm wearing jeans - forget it, I can't get my
foot that high! I use a mounting block most of the time and I have Harley
trained to align himself to the nearest rock/fence/whatever..
