Find your aerobic conditioning heartrate:
220-agex.65-.85. This will give you a target heart
rate range. While out there walking or jogging (which
you might have to do to get your heart rate up in that
range) strive to keep your own heart rate up for a
good 20-30 minutes at least three times each week.
You could do more, but sore muscles may discourage
you. I have to walk because of my knees, but I carry
3# weights in my hands(they have a wrap around
apparatus) and swinging them gets my heart going. I
also love to get off the last three miles of a workout
and jog/walk with my buddy. He likes that, as I
loosen the girth and pull out a snack for him.

metabolism will drop to compensate. Better to work
out harder, eat 1200-1500 calories(whole foods mainly
- not sugar)and get enough sleep at night.

When crash dieters really starve themselves, they are
burning up their glycogen stores and a little bit of
fat and, of course, lean tissues. When our muscles
release glycogen, they also release water, so the
weight loss looks great on the scale.

Better to work out to gain lean mass and lose the fat.
That takes time and the discipline you are applying
to NOT EATING (wish I had that discipline). Just as
you will have to bring your new buddy up to fitness,
so you must bring yourself up to fitness. I love it
because I can relate to what my mount is experiencing
with muscle soreness, or dehydration(I live in the
desert) or tiredness, etc. So, get in shape with your
buddy and you will make a great team.

The best (most honest?) measure of your own fitness
will NOT be the bathroom scale, but the bathroom
mirror - NAKED, with the lights on....
