I live in California also and we installed a Nelson waterer last Fall. It is 
great. First winter I have not had to break ice. The installation was a lot 
of work but we finally got it done. If we put one in the other stall we 
simple buy a "back-to-back" plumbing thingy and we don't have to dig another 
trench.
