RE: Re: Re: Feet (was Thoroughbreds as Endurance Horses)

My husband rides a TB and the biggest problem is not poor quality feet, but
lower than normal soles.(flat foot) With creative shoeing (Victory Elite
Roderunner) and equipak he has done very well. We live in an arid rocky area
so the miles we have put on him have been not all that easy. That particular
shoe offers a wide web and lifts the sole higher off the ground. We have
been active in both the Flat Track racing of TB's for 15 years and in and
out of Endurance Riding since 1974. My husband took his horse on his first
LD and won the ride and received a perfect score of 500 for BC. So with
proper management and selection TB's can do.

I have no experience with TBs as endurance horses, but I remember a comment
from Matthew Mackay-Smith, many years ago....TBs have both fast and slow
twich muscle and are capable of making good endurance horses, but "a
Thoroughbred's cross to bear is his feet". In other words, MM-S felt that
TB's feet were of poor quality and inclined to fail holding up to endurance
work.
