RE: Re: preloading electrolytes

Clarified it for me, but then again, I use an entirely different system.

Right before a ride, I pour a whole bag of rock salt down my horses throat
(sometimes adding a pinch of Habanero pepper powder for some extra KICK),
set him inside of cement mixer and mix for 5 minutes. How do I know my
recipe is working? Well, there isn't any ice within miles of the
barn...duh, I now live in Santa Cruz, there isn't any ice here ever!

Yes. I'm back. New home - Santa Cruz, CA.

The body doesn't store extra e'lytes, so anything in excess of replacing
recent losses is just peed out fairly promptly. But you do lose some in
transport, and if you're traveling more than one day, then pre-loading
produces something of a thirst response so they keep drinking and minimize
travel dehydration. The night before just tops the tank off for the next
day, and a small dose just before the start again sets up a thirst response
so they'll start drinking early, as well as starts hitting the system just
about the time they start sweating and losing the previous load.

Did that clarify anything or just confuse you horribly? :-D
