Re: castle rock ride/dog

Nope. Took a dopermann cross and a German Shepherd cross and one jack
russell. Maggie was let out the house by Saxon.

Dogs (especially in the country) don't see property lines. You took your
dog through that dog's territory. I learned as a kid that it wasn't good to
take my collie when I walked, rode my bike or my horse past houses. Even
though the collie usually won, I spent all my time waiting for him to finish
his fight.

Sorry, this did not happen in these dogs "territory". They were off their
territory due to their owner's negligence. Moreover, I don't get this "its
okay for dogs to fight if they're on their territory" bullshit. My dogs DO
NOT FIGHT. Period. It is not acceptable to me, which is why I spent a
fortune on socalisation, puppy training, obedience training, etc, etc. My
dogs are welcome on any other dog owner's property because they will not
fight. Nor will they fight on their own property.

You moved to the country to get away from things like leash laws, but then
you expect the neighbors to have their dogs confined. You said you couldn't
help it if their dog wasn't trained. How do you train your dog not to jump
on a Jack Russel who wanders through his turf...buy a few Jack Russels, let
him jump one, then beat the crap out of him for it?

I have never had to beat the crap out of any of my dogs to train them not to
fight. I have introduced them to other dogs from an early age and they have
simply never fought. I have seven dogs : two large females, two small
females, to large males and one small male. I do not have a territoriality
/ dominance / fighting issue among my dogs, or between my pack and other
dogs. They are WELL SOCIALISED. If they weren't, I would not allow them
out. These dogs are a danger to horses, people in cars, other dogs, other
people and themselves (the jack russel in the pack was run over the day
before my dog was attacked). The blame for this must lie with the owner. I
have no problem with dogs being out, because on the whole we have a happy,
small environment, where all the dogs get on great. My neighbour's male
dobermann regularly jumped the fence to play with my lot - happily.

You sent them the vet bill. Good move. Good luck getting to ride on
ANYBODY in the county's property in the future. To me, access to my trails
is worth a lot more than a cash. It took me 4 or 5 years to earn
>my neighbor's trust. Now, SLOWLY they've all invited me to cross their
property and even ride on it.

I was not ON their property. I was in open, public veld. Their dogs were
locked OUT of their property. This was not an endurance ride. It was a
simple outride from my house, round the block, through the veld and back.

One of the main reasons the man who owns the ONLY access bridge to my side
of Lookout Mtn. had for barring anyone from coming through was that they
brought dogs. After a year or 2 of seeing me leave my dogs at home, he gave
me...and only me access.

Absolutely right. If it's your property, do what you want. If it's not,
it's different.

If you've decided to "move to the country" to get away from what you didn't
like about the city (rules) you'll have to learn how to adjust to not being
constantly protected. We generally take matters into our own hands...a well
tossed firecracker will usually make any dog decide you're no fun, or if
you don't want to spook your horse some of the spray that the mail man and
meter readers carry will make sure he remembers you next time.

I have done all I can within parameters : I have chased the dogs with my
horse, wacked them with my crop and politely requested the owner on more
than one occasion to keep the dogs in. Firecrackers are illegal over here,
and my point is that it is not the dogs fault : it is the owners. This guy
has a six foot wall around his property with electric fencing on top and a
gate which the dogs can't squeeze through. The reason they were on the road
is because he had locked them out when he came home. sorry, that's
negligent.

P.S. I'm assuming this *is* the country... and not every dog fight is the
same as a major attack like the loose pit bulls they described in a previous
post.... also...one more note, if the dogs were "locked off of
their own property" it sounds as if they escaped their fence. It's not >too
often that anybody around here makes that much effort and has a fence.

Well, over here rape and murder are a major reason to have a fence. Also a
major reason why I ride with my dogs!

You've actually pissed me off because it was clear from your response that
you didn't read my original post properly.
