Ham radio clubs like to get out in the woods and play with their gear.
Many rides use these people as both spotters and for safety reasons. They
set up a base station at camp and and people are place at points of the
trail with their radios.

They can take the numbers or riders that go by. If you don't pass a check
then it is clear. They can also radio in if someone is having a problem
and needs aid on the trail.  This also helps the RM better manage since
he/she knows where all the riders are at any time (when a rider passes a
point their position is radioed back to camp)

Usually they will be more than happy to help and a small donation to
their club goes a long way.
