    Trotting distributes the horse's weight more evenly.  If you not sure 
about how much energy the horse is using, try putting a heart monitor on and 
first go at a trot then after try going at a canter.  To give it a good fair 
test, use the same part of the trail and start with the horse's heart rate 
below 60 bpm each time.  That should help you find out which is better for 
each horse.  Let us know what you find.  A good fun test!
