Re: Up Hill or Down

Angie, what do you do with your body on downhills?

Do you bring your shoulders back?

When my mare was young, on steep hills (we have a lot of those here) I
would do the snake thing, taking the hills - up or down - at an angle. Now
Candi does that on her own. I'm talking about really steep hills.

Have started trotting my big gelding down some hills - not terribly steep,
still slow down for those - but he has a much larger stride than Candi -
moves really well in his shoulders. She is much smaller, and built so
differently. I feel much safer on Gabe downhill - even though Candi is
much more surefooted. She's just little.

Want to start doing some serious distance riding - (Candi) if it ever gets
above -10. Just curious about what you do with your body to help your
horse balance. Do you stay upright -(perpendicular to the ground) or lean
back a tad - with legs out front - like all us wranglers were taught?

The ground is soft and loamy. He's perfectly balanced, and
