Re: RC: Herpes

Hi Janice
My vet told me that the babies who get foal pneumonia prior to weaning
actually contracted a form of herpes (rhino) and D. Elliotts theory was
that the mares probably had it and were successfully keeping the virus
under control but that the babies got it through the mares' milk and
were not able to shake it as easily. That was his theory and because we
were surrounded by horse ranches then with lots of traffic and we had
mares coming in to breed, I started giving the babies and their mammas
flu/rhino shots every 2 months. I don't know if Matt was correct in his
theory but it sure solved our problem.
Now we are in an area more remote (although only 4 mi from town) but no
heavy horse traffic. I do not vaccinate near as often and everyone is
still healthy.

I've learned that life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer it
gets to the end, the faster it goes. Smell the roses!
